e1RM: What an Estimated 1RM Actually Tells You

How to read an e1RM trend, why a single session means nothing, and where the estimate stops being trustworthy.

e1RM Is a Thermometer, Not a Target

An estimated 1RM is not a number you have to beat. It is an indicator that lets you compare today's session with last week's without testing a max. You hit 5 reps with 120 kg instead of 4 — e1RM rises, even though you never touched a single.

Its value comes from measurement frequency. You test a true 1RM a few times a year; you get an e1RM from every working set. That is how you see a trend change within two weeks instead of at the end of a block.

That frequency has one more consequence: e1RM catches a problem before it shows up in your results. A 3% drop across three consecutive sessions typically precedes the moment you notice missed reps by about two weeks. Two weeks in which a correction is still cheap.

Remember that e1RM is not a prediction of a competition result. Estimation formulas systematically overshoot for lifters with high strength endurance and undershoot for those who handle single maximal attempts well.

Three Sessions Is the Minimum Before Anything Is Readable

Day-to-day variation in submaximal strength is large and has documented causes. Acute sleep loss reduced exercise performance by an average of 7.56% (95% CI -11.9 to -3.13), with afternoon sessions hit consistently and morning sessions largely spared [1]. One bad session sits comfortably inside that spread.

So read a three-session rolling average for the same lift. Only three consecutive measurements trending down indicate a recovery deficit that needs a response, rather than a bad day.

The order in which you check causes matters. When the trend falls, start with what is cheapest to verify: sleep across the last three nights, session timing, the pre-workout meal, caffeine. Only if those are normal should you look at volume and proximity to failure.

That order is not arbitrary. Acute sleep loss reduces exercise performance on a scale that completely swamps the difference between two more or two fewer weekly sets [1]. Adjusting volume while under-slept is fixing the right thing in the wrong order.

Where the Estimate Stops Working

e1RM formulas are trustworthy in roughly the 1–8 rep range. Beyond ten reps the result depends more on endurance than on maximal strength, and the estimate starts to overshoot. A set of 20 tells you nothing about your single.

The second condition is constant proximity to failure. An e1RM from a set stopped at 4 RIR and one from a set at 1 RIR are two different numbers at the same weight and reps. Compare only sets performed with a similar reserve, or you are measuring your honesty rather than your strength.

The third condition is a constant variation. e1RM from a back squat and from a front squat are separate data series — merging them into one chart manufactures a trend that does not exist.

The practical consequence of those three conditions: e1RM is worth tracking for two or three lifts, not for everything. Pick a squat, a press and a row or deadlift, hold the variation and rep range constant in those, and run the rest of the plan on ordinary load progression.

Trying to track e1RM across fourteen exercises usually ends with none of them having data consistent enough for the trend to mean anything. Fewer things measured properly produce better decisions.

Which e1RM formula is best?

Less important than consistency. Pick one and stay with it — the trend stays valid even if the absolute number is a few kilos off.

Does e1RM work for the deadlift?

It works but usually underestimates, because grip and back endurance limit multi-rep sets before strength does. Stay in the 1–5 rep range for that lift.

Does a falling e1RM always mean overtraining?

No. Check sleep, calorie intake and session timing first — those are the most common causes. Volume comes after that.
