What to Do With a Session After Five Hours of Sleep

Skipping is usually a worse choice than scaling. Keep the first exercise with load reduced 5–10% at the same set count, and cut the last accessory. You hold contact with the main movement pattern and your weekly consistency, and drop the volume that would have been performed badly anyway.

Do not force your target RIR. With performance down, a reported 2 RIR often means an actual 0 — and then one set costs more fatigue than it delivers stimulus. In practice, hold 3 RIR on compounds on a day like that.

Two things are easy to confuse here: the capacity to perform a set and the capacity to recover from it. After a bad night both usually fall, but the second is the more expensive one — which is why scaling a session is mainly about volume rather than how heavy the bar feels.

Practically: if you are choosing between lowering the weight and cutting the last two sets, cut the sets. Keeping contact with the load is cheaper than keeping full volume while your ability to pay it back is reduced.

When Sleep Is a Program Problem, Not a Day Problem

One bad night is session scaling. Three weeks at six hours is a change of dose. If sleep is chronically short, the weekly volume you tolerated at seven hours stops being realistic, and holding it produces a falling e1RM rather than progress.

The simplest correction is a 20% cut in weekly sets while keeping the loads. You return to the previous volume when sleep returns — not when you feel better for one day.

Before deciding training volume is the problem, count how many nights in the last month were shorter than seven hours. If the answer is "half of them", this is not a programming question but a boundary condition the plan has to work inside.

In that situation the sensible decision is a smaller plan, not a better one. Four sets per muscle performed properly on six hours of sleep beat twelve sets you never recover from before the next session.

Usually yes, in a scaled version. Holding consistency is worth more than one session performed at full dose.

Does a nap make up for lost sleep?
